Dialogue Tags vs Action Tags

What is a dialogue tag? What is an action tag? How do I write them?

Dialogue tag: said, shouted, asked

Action tag: It explains what the character is doing.

Common misuse of dialogue and action tags.

Example:(Wrong way) “This room is really messy.” He said.

Whenever you’re writing dialogue and you use a dialogue tag it is part of the same sentence.

Example: (Right way) “This room is really messy,” he said.

So, what about an action tag?

Example: (Wrong way) “This room is really messy.” he crossed his arms.

Note that ‘he crossed his arms’ isn’t capitalized. This is an easy mistake to do. He crossed his arms is a separate sentence.

Example: (Right way) “This room is really messy.” He crossed his arms.
